White sandy beaches, cheap digs, fresh seafood and easy rollers all the way down the beach – welcome to Mancora, Peru.
Located just a few hours south of the Ecuador border, this small town boasts the best surf in all of Peru and a micro-climate that offers sunshine almost 365 days a year. Unlike it’s surf neighbor to the south, Trujillo, the waters on the beaches of Mancora are warm year round and the surf breaks over sand instead of rocks, making it a great place for both beginner surfers and those looking to just wade in the waters.
Cheap food and affordable accommodation line the main strip during shoulder season from April through November, making it the perfect place to base yourself for an extended stay. Surfing, tanning and hitting up the local bars that line the beach comprise the majority of the action in Mancora, but after weeks spent in the high altitude mountains of Peru and Bolivia, a little bit of R&R in the sunshine is a welcome treat.
Where to stay:
Loki Del Mar: If you’re looking to be in the center of the action with the bass pumping all night long then the massive Loki del Mar hostel complex is for you. Complete with its own pool and located right on the beach, this place is definitely the biggest party hostel in town. Dorms from $9/per person per night.
Casa de Mancora: If getting to bed before 4 am is a priority, this gem located across the street from the beach and next to a number of other great boutique hostels, offers a quiet space away from the busy main street complete with hammocks and a golden lab, Toby, who will follow you around town and hang with you at the beach. Private rooms from $12/night for two people with private bathroom. No website link unfortunately, just hop in a taxi and they’ll get you there.
Jen’s Overall Recommendation: If you’re looking to relax and work on your tan before heading home, this place is for you. You won’t find a better beach in all of Peru.
