It’s the last night on our round trip journey around south-western Australia, and after dropping Sandra from Germany off in Perth, we head north to Lancelin, for a night away from the city, just the two of us. At only two hours out of the city, Lancelin is the perfect weekend getaway; close enough to drive up on a Friday night after work, but far enough away from the bustling city to feel calm and relaxed in this small seaside town.
Surrounded by sand dunes on one side and the ocean on the other there are lots of ways to pass the time in Lancelin. From driving ATV’s to sand boarding down the dunes, to wind surfing, kite surfing and just lying at the beach, Lancelin offers many ways to pass the time.
We have checked into the one and only hostel in the town, the YHA Lancelin Lodge – and after a quick survey of the place, it is decidedly one of the best hostels we have stayed in across Australia and New Zealand. The rooms are clean and cozy, with comfortable beds and your own patio. The kitchen is clean with ample cooking space, and the common room centers around a big fireplace. With a large patio outside, a wood burning pizza oven, a pool (for the summer), and a ton of other amenities, we could easily stay here a week in warmer weather.
We spend the night reflecting on the great times we’ve had here in Australia, our trip has worked out even better than we ever could have imagined. I remember how nervous I was to leave it all behind, but it turned out to be the best decision I’ve ever made. With 3 months left to explore Asia, we’re looking forward to new cultures, food and more life changing experiences.
