Castaways at Costeño Beach

The dinner bell rings and tanned bodies semi clad in bikinis and board shorts clamour to find a seat at the wooden tables and along the bar. Food is passed around, drinks are ordered and you along with 30 of your new friends enjoy a communal meal beachside as the sun sets in the background. Welcome to Costeño beach.

Located along the Caribbean coast of Colombia just past the Tayrona National Park, Costeño beach surf camp offers the perfect beach bum getaway with surf, sand and nightly sunsets included daily. It’s a 20 minute walk off the main highway down a sandy path so if you can, leave your day bags back at your previous hostel for a less strenuous journey. A pair of flip flips, a bathing suit and some sunscreen is all you’ll need to enjoy this paradise.

Welcome to Costeño Beach

Once a coconut farm, two young guys from Canadian stumbled across this quiet stretch of beach and thought it would be the perfect place for a surf camp. A lot of hard work and a few years later the doors opened to a one-of-a-kind eco resort with accommodation ranging from hammocks strung up in bamboo hut to a custom built lodge that houses private rooms with ensuite bathrooms, solar power electricity and ocean views.

Boards and lessons are available on site with surf trips available every few days to alternate beaches if the conditions aren’t good at Costeños. Aside from surfing, there’s beach volleyball, the Colombian national sport Tejo, slacklining and plenty of hammocks available to spend a few days doing not much of anything at all.  With no wi-fi on site, it’s the perfect place for a digital detox.

Given its secluded nature, it’s a great place to meet other travels from around the world and chat about your adventures to fill the lazy afternoons. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks are all available at reasonable prices with a choice of meat/vegetarian options for lunch and a set meal for dinner. You might want to consider bringing some staples with you if you’re a picky eater. A basic kitchen, but no fridge, is available for self-catering.

Evenings consists of drinks around the long wooden table, stargazing at the beach and the occasional movie night on a projector screen before heading back to your hammock for some shut eye.

Girl Gone Gallivanting Overall Review:  If you’ve ever wanted to find your own version of The Beach Costeños comes pretty close. Great food, good surf, amazing new friends and (mostly) shark free waters for swimming.
